Bhopal, capital of Madhya Pradesh state, India, (population of a million people), used to be known by tourists for its charming old city, its fine old mosques and palaces . It became worldly famous because of its tragedy . On december, 3rd, 1984, 5 past midnight, the american pesticide firm Union Carbide exploded and leaked 5 tons of poisonous gas into the air. Between 16 and 30 000 people dead, 500 000 people injured. What’s ironic about this tragic accident is that when it was built, the pesticide plant had a humanitarian target : to help Bhopal to get rid of its murderous insects, and to save the third world from starvation… 18 years after the drama, people from Bhopal still suffer from medical problems. And an estimated 35 000 children have been exposed in utero or conceived by parents that had been exposed to poisonous gas, and need to be taken care of medically. Social worker Satinah Sarangi, native from Bhopal, founded the Sambhavna clinic ten years ago, with donations, to give free treatments to gas affected people. He wanted to bring back hope and life in this shocked city, and he now sees the results of his efforts : « Many people who had forgotten what it felt like to be healthy are reporting significant relief from pain ans breathlessness », says Sarangi. Dominique Lapierre, former journalist at the french magazine « Paris Match », author of several best sellers, is very active in NGOs to fight poverty in India. As he was travelling around India, he met Sarangi, who required his help. Touched by the determination of Sarangi, and convinced by the usefullness of his involvment, he decided to get involved too. And he financed a gynaecological clinic for the victims of the Bhopal drama, thanks to the royalties of his best-sellers « City of Joy » and « a thousand Suns ». With the spanish writer Javier Moro, he made a three-year-long investigation on the Bhopal disaster and published a book on this topic, « It was 5 past midnight » , which is already a best-seller in France and Spain, and which is about to be launched in UK and USA. The book has a double aim : to clarify the misinformation about the industrial disaster, and to help financing the gynaecological center he founded. The photographer Jason Taylor has accompanied Lapierre in the clinic in Bhopal. He met the victims of the drama, as well as the ones who are helping them to recover.
