KURDISH WOMEN IN TURKEY Photographs and text by Pierre-Yves GINET / TAÏGA (340-50092) The kurdish women are totally involved to take up turkish Kurdistan’s cause. As far back as 1984, they joined the guerilla within PKK (now called Kadek) ; then some were in the Ocalan troops. Between 1984 and 1999, 4 Millions people were exiled from their mother region, to the other end of the country ; situations where women had to battle to survive and to make their identity for themselves and for their people respected and finally recognized in the turkish state. Today, they are with the men at the frontline of this fight, with courage and determination. They are Eren Keskin, kurdish barrister, and vice president of Insan Haklari Dernegi (Turkish Human Rights Association), or Leyla Zana, Sakharov 1995 laureate, first elected kurdish woman at the Parliament, imprisoned for having claimed friendship between the kurdish and turkish people. They are one of these fit " Saturday Mothers ", or they are only a Kurd struggling for a dignified life through a long lasting resistance. |
