Calcutta. The city of joy. Of poverty and slums. The capital of the old British Raj. The home of Mother Theresa and Rabindranath Tagore. But what doesn’t immediately come to mind when someone says “Calcutta” is the image of a full-figured, grey haired, bespectacled Catholic sister in knee-length white habit, matching white sports socks and grey running shoes, her navy blue veil flapping behind her as she zips along on her scooter through the crowded roads of India’s cultural and artistic metropolis. more ...

Yabusame first appeared in Kyushu in the form of a prayer during Emperor Kinmei's reign 1,600 years ago. The ceremony took place to implore a good harvest, peace and well being. Yet it took another 800 years for 12 "equestrian games" - including Yabusame - to be included in the imperial ceremony. Yabusame soon gained the status of a sacred ritual, carried out by demi-heros.

Chaos reigns, while fire balls swing, painted bodies dance to a procession of drummers, extravagant costumes dazzle the skyline and a crowd of around 12, 000 revellers gather in Edinburgh to celebrate the two thousand year old Celtic Festival, Beltane. Calton Hill, rising up from the centre of Scotlands capital, is the site for this mesmerising event that occurs every year on 30th April. About 20 years ago, Master Seol Jeog-un defied the Buddhist order and created a school that made a Korean tradition hitherto reserved for Buddhist monks available to the public. More than a sport, the Sonmudo is a way of living, thinking and being. A fascinating encounter with Master, a sport, a school and it's students.
