The Pope and His Childhood — 20/25

POLAND · OCTOBER 2003

Czestochowa Monastery. St. Mary’s Day (Assumption). The other major pilgrimage day in the Polish Calendar when over fifty thousand pilgrims come to pray to the painting of the Black Madonna. The Pope first visited when he was only 12 years old and the image of Mary was very important to him – “a mother who was forever and wouldn’t die.” - as one biographer put it.
