Kurdish Women in Turkey — 7/34

TURKEY · 2003

May 17, 2003 - Istanbul - Turkey A woman brandishes the portrait of Karakoa, the Kurdish deputy kidnapped and assassinated by forces in 1995, during the commemoration honoring Hasan Oak, at the Ghazi cemetery. The body of this young Kurd, a political activist, was found on May 19, 1995, 45 days after his kidnapping by the police. Every May 19, sympathizers of his far-left party and many of the ‘Saturday Mothers’ assemble at his tomb. His case is a strong symbol because his family was the first to publicly request accounts from the Turkish State and pursue its action. His mother and sister have always been at the head of the “Saturday Mothers”. Karakoa’s body is also at the Ghazi cemetery, and every year, the “Saturday Mothers” walk by his tomb.
