April 25, 2003 - Ankara - Turkey Surrounded by an imposing police force, the deputies’ family and friends, along with many representatives of international institutions and NGOs, await the arrival of the four Kurdish deputies by armored van, before the trial’s second session of April 25, 2003. In 1994, Leyla Zana, the first woman elected to the Turkish parliament, winner of the Sakharov prize in 1995, and three other Kurdish deputies, Ohran Dogan, Hatip Dicle and Selim Sadak, were sentenced to 15 years in prison for “separatist acts”. Their crime was to have spoken in their native language and to have advocated the respect of the Kurdish identity in the parliament. The trial that led to their incarceration led to Turkey’s condemnation in 2001 by the European Court of Human Rights for violating the right to a fair trial. Giving in to European pressure, a second trial began in March 2003.
