Kurdish Women in Turkey — 8/34

TURKEY · 2003

April 25, 2003 - Ankara - Turkey Leyla Zana leaves court, handcuffed, on April 25, after the second session of the Kurdish deputies’ second trial. Over a hundred policemen and soldiers surrounded the deputies. Leyla Zana was the first woman elected to the Turkish parliament. The day she was sworn in, wearing a Kurdish tricolor headband, she made a declaration to the assembly in her native language, calling for friendship between the Kurdish and Turkish people, and for the respect of the Kurdish identity. For this “separatist” act, she was sentenced in 1994 to 15 years in prison, along with three other Kurdish deputies. A symbol of the strong – but non-violent - Kurdish claim of the Turkish army’s abuse during the dirty war (1984-1999), she received in 1995 the Sakharov prize for human rights. Le 1994 trial that led to her incarceration along with three other Kurdish deputies, Ohran Dogan, Hatip Dicle and Selim Sadak, led to Turkey’s condemnation in 2001 by the European Court of Human Rights for violating the right to a fair trial. Giving in to European pressure, a second trial began in March 2003.
