Kurdish Women in Turkey — 11/34

TURKEY · 2003

May 15, 2003 - Diyarbakir - Turkey Nezahat Teke and her one-and-a-half old baby. A mother of six, she lost her eldest, Nesrin, whose portrait is in the background: in 2000, nearly two years after the arrest of Ocalan, the leader of the PKK, Nesrin, 19, responsible for the Kurdish magazine for the Diyarbakir region, arrested repeatedly by the police or the army for activities within the magazine, immolated herself in protest of the conditions of the Kurdish chief’s detention. According to her mother, the young woman was then in a catastrophic psychological condition, worsening on each arrest. Like the many Kurdish mothers who lost a loved one during the dirty war, she responded by giving birth to another child, regretting that it wasn’t another daughter, whom she had already planned to name Nesrin. Her youngest son’s name is Tirej (ray of sunlight). At forty, she is the youngest of the “Mothers for Peace”. These thirty women aged between 40 and 75 have gathered to call for an end to violence, for reconciliation, for immunity for the Kurdish guerrillas as well as the ones convicted by Turkey, and for the acknowledgement of the Kurdish identity. These women grab any opportunity to have their voice be heard.
